What to know about Luxor

How long: 2–3 nights recommended. Stay in Luxor and you reach the West Bank tombs in the cool of the morning, with Karnak in the afternoon light.
What deserves priority: Valley of the Kings, West Bank and Karnak.

What to know about Cairo & Giza

How long: 3 nights recommended. Give Giza and the museum a full day together, then a second day for historic Cairo's mosques, churches and bazaar.
What deserves priority: Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

What to know about Fayoum

How long: A day from Cairo, or a night. About two hours from Cairo each way. A day covers Wadi El Rayan or the Valley of the Whales; a night by Lake Qarun lets you see both without rushing.
What deserves priority: Wadi El Rayan's lakes and waterfalls, and the whale fossils of Wadi El Hitan.
