Fayoum

Day 1 · 1 night
What to know about Fayoum
How long
A day from Cairo, or a night. About two hours from Cairo each way. A day covers Wadi El Rayan or the Valley of the Whales; a night by Lake Qarun lets you see both without rushing.
What deserves priority
Wadi El Rayan's lakes and waterfalls, and the whale fossils of Wadi El Hitan.
  • Wadi el-Hitan

A desert valley of fossil whales with legs, from a sea that covered Egypt forty million years ago.

Valley of the Kings, West Bank and Karnak.
  • Colossi of Memnon

Two seated colossi of Amenhotep III, the gatekeepers of a temple the flood once filled.

Not a temple. A temple city.

    Open 06:00–17:00, checked 3 September 2026

  • Luxor Temple

The temple the god came to visit.

    Open 06:00–20:00, checked 15 September 2026

  • Medinet Habu

Ramesses III's temple and fortress, where the builders of the royal tombs came to demand their pay.

  • Temple of Hatshepsut

Hatshepsut's terraced temple against the cliffs, facing Karnak across the river.

    Open 06:00–17:00, checked 3 September 2026

Nile & Aswan

Days 4–8 · 4 nights
What to know about Nile & Aswan
How long
4–5 nights recommended. Temples by day and the river between them: choose a boat by its name and its hours ashore, and the Nile does the rest.
What deserves priority
A cruise or dahabiya, Philae and time in Aswan.
  • Aswan High Dam

The monument that ended ancient Egypt's calendar.

  • Edfu Temple

The temple of Horus, whose walls are a library turned outwards.

    Open 06:00–17:00, checked 3 September 2026

A granite island at the first cataract, where Egypt used to end.

    Open 08:00–16:00, checked 3 September 2026

    Best time
October to April for cooler days ashore

Our tip: Four nights instead of three buys a whole day for Luxor's West Bank, the part of a cruise most often rushed. Judge the ship by its name and the hours ashore, not its star label.
