This eight-day tour puts Egypt's two most famous sights and its warmest sea into one trip. It starts with the monuments while you are fresh and ends with three nights by the Red Sea, where the only schedule is the one you choose.

In Cairo you see the pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, whose collection runs from Egypt's first kings to the Roman period. An early flight takes you to Luxor for a full day: the Valley of the Kings, where the New Kingdom hid its royal tombs, Hatshepsut's terraced temple, the Colossi of Memnon and, on the East Bank, Karnak, less a temple than a temple city.

The next morning the road crosses the Eastern Desert to Hurghada, about 290 km and three and a half hours' driving. Three nights by the sea follow, with breakfast and dinner at the hotel and the days free for the beach, a snorkelling boat or a desert evening. The tour ends with the drive back to Cairo, about 460 km, and a last night there before your flight.

Our advice

The two road days are the price of ending at the sea. If you would rather fly home from Hurghada, ask: many airlines fly there directly, and the quote can end the trip on the coast.

Consider instead: Prefer the river to the road? The 10-day tour cruises from Aswan to Luxor and ends by the sea at Sharm el-Sheikh.

The Egyptian Museum and the pyramids of Giza
The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, then the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and a close look at the Sphinx. Night in Cairo.
Giza Plateau: Three generations of kings built here; the plateau asks who did the building, and how they lived.
Day 3
Fly to Luxor: the West Bank and Karnak
An early flight to Luxor for the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon, then Karnak, the great temple of Amun. Night in Luxor.
Valley of the Kings: The royal cemetery of the New Kingdom, cut into a dry valley beneath a pyramid-shaped peak.
Day 4
Across the desert to Hurghada
About three and a half hours by road to the Red Sea coast, arriving in time for the beach. Dinner and night at your Hurghada hotel.

Hurghada, free
A day at leisure. A snorkelling boat to the reefs, a desert safari or a Bedouin dinner can be added.
Day 6
Hurghada, free
Another day by the sea, with breakfast and dinner at the hotel.

Back to Cairo

Before you ask

Will we see Tutankhamun's treasures?

Not at the Egyptian Museum: they now have their own galleries at the Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza. Ask to swap the museum if Tutankhamun matters most to you.

Can we end the trip in Hurghada instead of Cairo?

Ask for it in your request. Hurghada has its own international airport, and the quote can replace the drive back and the last night in Cairo.

Is this a good trip with children or for a honeymoon?
