The story
In a tandem skydive you are harnessed to an instructor and share one parachute; first-jump freefall lasts 30 to 60 seconds at about 120 mph (USPA). You do nothing technical, but you do need to keep your body in the position you are taught.
Egypt has a small number of skydiving operators. Regular tandem jumps run from a drop zone east of Cairo, and jumps over the Giza pyramids and above El Gouna happen on announced dates only, often in autumn. What travellers praise is the instructors; what they complain about is weather cancellations announced late and slow refunds. We plan around both.
Our judgement: The jump is the easy part to sell. We confirm the instructor, the date and the refund terms, because weather decides more skydives than anyone admits.
What happens
- Arrive at the airfield with your passport, sign the waiver and have your weight checked.
- A safety briefing with your tandem instructor: the exit position, the arch and the landing.
- Climb to altitude in the jump plane, then leave the door together.
- Freefall, the canopy opening, several quiet minutes under the parachute, and a landing on your feet or your seat.
A proposed shape, not a fixed programme. The host sets the order on the day.
What it asks of you
Nerve, a clean bill of health and flexibility. Jumpers must be 16 or older and under about 100 kg. Not for anyone pregnant or with back or heart problems.
