This seven-day private tour covers Egypt's classic route, from the pyramids of Giza to the temples of Abu Simbel near the southern border, and it fits into a week because two of its nights are spent on the sleeper train. You travel while you sleep and wake up at the next chapter.

In Cairo you see the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum and the old bazaar of Khan el-Khalili, before boarding the night train south. In Luxor you cross to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, where the New Kingdom hid its royal tombs in the hills, and the terraced temple of Hatshepsut, then return to the East Bank for Karnak. The next day you drive to Aswan for the High Dam and the island temple of Philae, and before dawn the day after you set out for Abu Simbel, where Ramesses II cut two temples into the rock above Lake Nasser. The sleeper train brings you back to Cairo for a free day before you fly home.

Our advice

Seven days reaches Abu Simbel without rushing Cairo only because two nights are on the train. If sleeping on a train is not for you, ask for the flight upgrade.

Consider instead: Want Tutankhamun's treasures? They are now shown at the Grand Egyptian Museum; ask for it on day 2 or on your free day 6.

The whole of Egypt's story south along the Nile in a week: kings who built to be seen at Giza, who hid their tombs in the Valley of the Kings, who carved their power into the cliff at Abu Simbel, and the Ptolemies who kept building for Isis at Philae.

Day 1
Arrive in Cairo
Met at Cairo airport with a name sign, helped through arrival and taken to your hotel.
Day 2
Giza, the Egyptian Museum and Khan el-Khalili
The pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Sphinx, then the Egyptian Museum and the old bazaar. In the evening, the sleeper train to Luxor, with dinner on board.
Giza Plateau: Three generations of kings built here; the plateau asks who did the building, and how they lived.
Day 3
Luxor: the West Bank and Karnak
Met off the train for the Valley of the Kings and the temple of Hatshepsut beneath the cliffs, then Karnak, the great temple of Amun, before your hotel in Luxor.
Valley of the Kings: The royal cemetery of the New Kingdom, cut into a dry valley beneath a pyramid-shaped peak.
Day 4
By road to Aswan: the High Dam and Philae
About four hours' drive south with your guide, then the Aswan High Dam and a boat to the temple of Isis at Philae, moved to its island when the dam was built. Night in Aswan.

Abu Simbel, then the night train to Cairo
An early start with a breakfast box for Abu Simbel, where Ramesses II cut two temples into the rock above Lake Nasser. Back in Aswan, the sleeper train to Cairo.

Day 6
Cairo at your pace
Arrive in Cairo and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free: the Grand Egyptian Museum or a walk in historic Cairo both fit.

Before you ask

What is the sleeper train like?

Two nights of the trip are spent on the overnight train between Cairo and Upper Egypt, in a sleeping compartment, with dinner and breakfast on board. It saves two hotel nights and two days of travel.

Can we fly instead of taking the train?

Yes. An upgrade to domestic flights is available, and your quote shows the difference.

Why the Egyptian Museum and not the Grand Egyptian Museum?

The tour visits the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. Tutankhamun's treasures are now at the Grand Egyptian Museum, which you can add on day 2 or on your free day.

How early is the Abu Simbel day?

Early: you leave Aswan before dawn with a breakfast box, see both temples, and return in time for the night train.

Is it very tiring?

It is a full week: two nights on the train, a long road day and an early start for Abu Simbel. The free day in Cairo at the end is there to recover.
