The Grand Egyptian Museum: hours, tickets and how to plan the day

The short answer: The galleries open 09:00–18:00, and until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays, per the museum's ticket site. Tickets are timed, named and single-entry, and include the Tutankhamun Galleries and the Khufu boats. Allow at least half a day.

What it is

The museum opened formally on 1 November 2025, about 2 km from the Giza pyramids. It holds over 100,000 objects, and for the first time the whole of Tutankhamun's tomb group, 5,398 objects, is shown in one place (Wikipedia; The Art Newspaper).

  • The Grand Hall and Grand Staircase: colossal statues on the way up to the galleries, with the colossus of Ramesses II in the hall.
  • The Tutankhamun Galleries: the full tomb group, from the mask to the chariots.
  • The Khufu Boats Museum: the two boats buried beside the Great Pyramid, moved here from Giza.

Last entry is one hour before the galleries close.

  • Timed entry: you choose an entry slot when you buy.
  • Named and single-entry: a ticket is tied to the person named on it, and leaving ends the visit.
  • Included: the Tutankhamun Galleries, the main galleries, the Grand Hall, the Grand Staircase, the Khufu Boats Museum, the commercial area and the gardens.
  • Photography: personal photos are allowed; flash, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and live-streaming are not.

How we would plan it (our judgement)

  • Give it at least half a day, and don't squeeze it in after the pyramids on the same day.
  • Use a late opening (Wednesday or Saturday) to see the pyramids in the morning and the museum in the evening.
  • Go to the Tutankhamun Galleries early in your slot, before they fill.
  • Book the entry slot as soon as your Cairo dates are fixed.
