Why this route

Most first journeys move quickly from Cairo to Luxor. This one asks what becomes visible when you do not skip the country in between. Beni Hasan's rock-cut tombs preserve painted scenes of work, movement and daily life from the Middle Kingdom. Farther south, Abydos and Dendera put different forms of sacred memory and temple-making into the same conversation before the route reaches Luxor. The route, stop by stop

  1. Beni Hasan

    Rock-cut tombs whose painted scenes of work, movement and daily life survive from the Middle Kingdom.

  2. Abydos and Dendera

    Two different forms of sacred memory and temple-making, seen on the same road south.

  3. Luxor

    2–3 nights recommended

    Stay in Luxor. An overnight visit gives the West Bank a cool early start and avoids a punishing resort day trip.

  • Site access, opening rules and any permissions must be checked for the exact date.
  • If you care more about the unanswered questions than the postcard sequence, the extra road hours may repay you; if not, they will feel long.
