The Abu Simbel sun festival: when the sun reaches the sanctuary
The short answer: On 22 February and 22 October, according to Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the rising sun enters the Great Temple, crosses the hall and lights the statues in the sanctuary. The next dates are 22 October 2026 and 22 February 2027. Plan to be there before dawn.
What happens
Ramesses II cut the Great Temple into the rock so that its axis runs from the entrance, through the pillared hall, to a sanctuary where four seated statues face the door. On two mornings a year, the Ministry says, the sun's rays enter the temple, cross the main hall and light the innermost statues.
The four statues are Ptah, Amun, Ra-Horakhty and the deified Ramesses. Toby Wilkinson writes that Ptah sits permanently in shadow, as our Abu Simbel page records.
The dates, and what the sources disagree on
- Official dates: 22 February and 22 October, from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. These are the dates we plan to.
- The sources disagree: Wilkinson gives 21 February and 21 November. Many popular accounts say the dates moved by a day when the temple was relocated; we have found no primary source for that claim and do not repeat it as fact.
- Why the temple moved: between 1964 and 1968 both temples were cut apart and rebuilt on higher ground, to save them from the lake behind the Aswan High Dam. The site joined the World Heritage List in 1979 (UNESCO).
How to plan it
- Tickets cost more on the two sun days. The Ministry lists separate prices for 22 February and 22 October; check them before you travel.
- The site normally opens 06:00–17:00. On the sun days, entry arrangements are set on the day; ask what time the gates open.
- It is far from Aswan. A road day spends roughly six hours in transit. For a dawn event that means leaving in the night, or staying at Abu Simbel the night before. Flying saves road time.
- Expect a crowd. Our judgement: the view into the sanctuary is narrow, and people wait in line to pass. Watching the light from the hall, and the crowd outside at sunrise, is part of the day.

- Whether a night at Abu Simbel is available and worth it for your party
- Entry arrangements and ticket prices published for that date
- A plan for the heat and the wait if you are travelling with children
