Fayoum

Days 1–2 · 2 nights
What to know about Fayoum
How long
A day from Cairo, or a night. About two hours from Cairo each way. A day covers Wadi El Rayan or the Valley of the Whales; a night by Lake Qarun lets you see both without rushing.
What deserves priority
Wadi El Rayan's lakes and waterfalls, and the whale fossils of Wadi El Hitan.
  • Wadi el-Hitan

A desert valley of fossil whales with legs, from a sea that covered Egypt forty million years ago.
