Solo female travel in Egypt: what the advice says, and how to plan around it
The short answer: Three governments' advice says women, including foreigners, face unwanted attention in Egypt, from comments to touching. The UK advises caution when travelling alone, particularly at night in taxis, and lists precautions such as sharing your driver's details and live location. What the advice says
United Kingdom
Female travellers should exercise caution when travelling alone, particularly at night in taxis. Most sexual assaults reported to the British Embassy took place in Red Sea resorts, often by someone the victim had already met, including hotel workers and excursion staff.
United States
Harassment of women, including foreigners, is a problem in Egypt, from vulgar comments and gestures to unwanted physical contact.
Canada
Women, particularly foreigners, are frequently subject to unpleasant male attention, harassment and verbal abuse, and the risk rises around public holidays.
The precautions the UK lists
From the UK government's advice (read 30 September 2026):
- Avoid travelling in a taxi alone; if you must, share your driver's details, your trip and your live location with a friend.
- Do not allow hotel staff into your room when you are alone.
- Use reputable providers for services and excursions, and research them beforehand.
- Avoid sharing personal contact or social media details.
