What to know about Alexandria

How long: A long day from Cairo, or a night. Catacombs, a Roman theatre and the Mediterranean seafront. A day trip from Cairo is about six hours on the road in total; a night gives you an evening on the Corniche.
What deserves priority: The catacombs, the Roman theatre and Qaitbay Fort.

What to know about The Red Sea

How long: 3–5 nights recommended. Base yourself in Hurghada or Sharm for the reefs. Cairo is a short flight away, and Luxor makes a fine overnight from Hurghada.
What deserves priority: Snorkelling, diving and genuine rest.
