What to know before you go

- A long day from Cairo, or a night. A day trip from Cairo spends around six hours of the day on the road. Staying a night gives the city itself more time.

- The catacombs, the Roman theatre and Qaitbay Fort.

A tomb built for the rich that grew into a city of the dead.
- Kom el-Dikka
Roman Alexandria at street level, uncovered in the middle of the modern city.
